The summer vacations are ending, and the start of the new school year is just around the corner! Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland will lead the way on September 5, followed a week later by the remaining federal states. An overview of the most important dates and – especially important – vacations and public holidays:

School hasn’t even started yet, but we can discuss the first vacation immediately. They come at the end of October with the Austria-wide autumn vacations between National Day (October 26) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Since October 26 falls on a Wednesday this year, schools could take Monday and Tuesday off school autonomously, thus extending the time off. Alternatively, since November 2 is also a Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of that week could also be used for school-autonomous days and a vacation extension.

A total of four such school-autonomous days are available to schools in 2022/23. Another opportunity for use is at the beginning of December: Mary’s Conception (December 8) falls on a Thursday this year, making Friday a perfect day for school autonomy.
December 24 is a Saturday this year and marks the beginning of the Christmas vacations, which last until January 8.

The 2023 semester break is scheduled in Vienna and Lower Austria from February 4 to 12. Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg fall on February 11-19, and Upper Austria and Styria on February 18-26.
In the coming school year, students will have a uniform Easter break from April 1 to 10.

The national holiday on May 1 falls on a Monday in the coming school year. The following day (May 2), the 2023 central school-leaving examinations will begin with Latin and Greek examinations, which will last until May 11 (Italian).
On May 18, there will again be a Thursday holiday, Ascension Day.
The Pentecost vacations from May 27 to 29 no longer have a real vacation character: it is only an extended weekend consisting of the Pentecost weekend and Pentecost Monday. Tuesday is taught commonly since the introduction of the fall vacations (unless it is released to school autonomously).
Then the last holiday before school ends in Corpus Christi on June 8 – again, the following Friday is a candidate for a school-autonomous day as it is a gusset day.
The school year ends on June 30 in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland and on July 7 in the other federal states. School then starts again on September 4 and 11, respectively.
